ON SHAN-SHUI

Shanshui, or the traditional chinese style of landscape painting, literally means 'mountain-water'. It portrays the two complementary poles of the Dao: the Yang as the mountain and the Yin as water. Shan-Shui does not represent an image of nature, it depicts a thought about nature. The intent is to capture an awareness of inner reality as though the colors flow directly from within.

The ON SHAN-SHUI series revisits these landscapes as backdrops to adorn geometric pedestal stools. We sit above, where the water meets the mountains, in that middle void where all potentiality is harbored. The translucency of the colored glazes and the mesmerizing glossy finish of the whole, accentuate a subtle visual depth that underlines an almost palpable quiet.

“Sit atop the mountain, enjoy the air and behold the view; you can see the world but the world cannot see you”.
